The restoration of steam locomotive 65033 is making impressive progress, and it’s time to dive into the exciting developments! The Locomotive Conservation and Learning Trust has recently shared an update highlighting some significant advancements in the ongoing work on J21 No. 65033.
According to the trust, substantial strides have been made in the restoration process. Locomotive Maintenance Services Ltd is currently focused on the boiler, where they are nearing the completion of riveting on both the outer wrapper and crown sheet. Once these final touches are done, the engineering team will be able to start drilling holes for the stays on the sides, a crucial step that paves the way for the next phases of reconstruction.
In 2023, the team fabricated a new backhead for the boiler, which now requires a bracket to be riveted on before the oads can be installed. After this task is completed, the backhead will be ready to await the installation of the inner firebox.
Speaking of the inner firebox, the tubeplate for it is now 90% complete, with only some finishing work needed on one corner to ensure it fits perfectly.
As for the inner firebox wrapper, the team has meticulously marked out locations for the rivets, and approximately 80% of those holes have already been drilled. Soon, the doorplate will be positioned for drilling as well, allowing for another critical part of the restoration to take place.
