Ontario Science Centre's New Home: Smaller, More Expensive, and Controversial (2026)

A shocking revelation has emerged about the Ontario Science Centre's upcoming move: it's a downgrade all around.

The new home is smaller, more expensive, and lacks the charm of the original.

Premier Doug Ford's announcement at Ontario Place unveiled a controversial plan. The project, led by renowned architects Snøhetta and Hariri Pontarini, is tainted with misleading claims. The $1.04-billion price tag is more than double the initial promise, and the new facility is significantly smaller than the iconic 1969 building.

But here's where it gets controversial: the government closed the original centre, citing roof dangers, which their own engineers disputed. This move prevented public scrutiny and awareness of the inferior new centre.

The new complex, approximately 280,000 sq. ft., lacks the large workshops, planetarium, and tropical rainforest of the old centre's 568,000 sq. ft. space. Exhibition space has shrunk, and the government's refusal to provide floor plans raises questions about transparency.

Aesthetically, the old centre offered a grand entrance, a descent into nature. The new one feels more like a rat's maze than a bird's flight.

Snøhetta's involvement, while adding credibility, also brings controversy with their recent union-busting allegations.

And this is the part most people miss: Ontario Place, once a park, is now a traffic-jammed entertainment hub, going against decades of expert advice for Toronto's waterfront.

We're left with questions: What happens to the old building? Why the rush to dismantle a public institution?

The new centre promises a different education: one of broken promises and political spin.

What are your thoughts on this controversial move? Do you think the government made the right decision, or is this a step backward for Toronto's cultural landscape? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
