The United Kingdom's greenhouse gas emissions have seen a significant drop in 2025, falling by 2.4% to their lowest level in over 150 years, according to Carbon Brief analysis. This achievement is largely attributed to a reduction in coal and gas use, which have reached their lowest levels since 1600 and 1992, respectively. The end of coal power and a slowdown in the steel industry have played a pivotal role in this decline. Additionally, the UK has witnessed a record-high generation from renewable sources, particularly wind and solar, while nuclear generation has seen a decline. Oil use has also decreased, aided by the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). The country's emissions are now 54% below 1990 levels, while its GDP has nearly doubled. However, to meet its legally binding net-zero target, emissions will need to continue falling, with an average reduction of 15MtCO2e per year until 2050. The UK's progress in reducing emissions has been steady over the past decade, with territorial emissions falling in 27 out of 36 years since 1990. Despite this, the country still has a long way to go to meet its climate goals, including the upcoming seventh carbon budget and the 2050 net-zero target.
